Abstract

Health belief is an important factor for the performance of health behaviors. Young adulthood is a critical period to establish the health belief and behaviors for healthy life. As a health professional, nurse can help young people establish more positive health belief and perform health behaviors more effectively. Before helping them, it is necessary to identify the status of their health belief and behaviors.The purpose of this study was to identify the status of health belief and health behaviors of some university students in Korea. Subjects of this study was 2000 students from 10 universities, but data from 1605 subjects were analyzed. Data were collected from May 5th, 1998 to June 21th, 1998. Instruments of this study were 2 tools for the measurement of ¡¯health belief¡¯ and ¡¯performance of health behaviors¡¯ of the students, which were developed and used by previous researchers. Cronbach¡¯s ¥ás were .8737 at the tool for the health belief and .8385 at the tool for the health behaviors.
The results of this study were as follows.
(1) Average score of the subjects were 117.68 at health belief and 95.15 at performance of health behaviors.
(2) There was a significant correlation between the health belief and the performance of health behaviors(r= .419).
(3) School year, major, health status, experience of diseases of the students were important factors in the explanation of health belief(28.8%).
(4) Health belief, major, health status, school year, sex, age, experience of diseases of the family members were important factors in the explanation of the performance of health behaviors (21.2%).
